Cā;
METAFONT (MF) is a new font-making compiler developed by D. E. Knuth here at the
lab. The standard version is obtainable by typing "r mf" to the monitor. It
produces ".tfm" files suitable for use with the new TEX.
The original MF program produces ".tfx" files suitable for use with XGPTEX;
say "r xgpmf" for this one.
The user manual is A. I. Memo No. 332 ( = CS Report No. 762).
There's no on-line or line-printer version, but you might be able to
figure out how to read MANUAL.TEX[MF,DEK].
A list of all known errors in the user manual appears in file ERRATA.TXT[MF,DEK].
This file also contains information about changes and extensions that were
made to TEX since the manual was printed, and it explains how to make new
variations of "computer modern" fonts to meet your own personal specifications.
The SAIL program contains extensive documentation about the implementation;
it's not merely "commented code". See file MFSYS.SAI[MF,DEK] and the
files it references.
